MEDIATE Progresses: From Planning to Action

The MEDIATE consortium has completed its first semester of work and is now entering an exciting new phase, moving from design and planning into active development and testing of its cybersecurity framework.

  About MEDIATE

MEDIATE is an EU-funded research and innovation project working to build a next-generation cybersecurity framework for the computing continuum - the interconnected world of devices, networks, and cloud systems that underpin modern critical infrastructure. The project brings together 15 partners from across Europe, combining expertise in hardware security, artificial intelligence, federated learning, and policy enforcement.

 First Semester Highlights

The project's first semester has been highly productive. Partners have come together at key consortium meetings, established the project's governance and communication structures, and completed the initial research phase - laying the groundwork for everything that follows. Key deliverables were submitted on schedule, covering project management, dissemination strategy, and a thorough analysis of the state of the art in cybersecurity for the project's target domains.

 

Building the foundations

Early-stage EU research projects are often underestimated in their complexity. Aligning 15 organisations across 9 countries around shared technical standards, communication protocols, and work plans is a significant achievement in itself. MEDIATE has done exactly that, and is now well-positioned to move into active development.

 Now: Moving into Development and Testing

The consortium is now in the process of connecting and testing its individual cybersecurity components together for the first time. This integration phase is a critical step on the road toward deploying the full framework in real-world environments.

 

What is integration testing?

Think of it like assembling a complex machine and switching it on for the first time. Each individual component has already been built and verified in isolation. Integration testing confirms that all the parts communicate correctly, that security events flow through the system as expected, and that responses are triggered in the right sequence - from detection all the way to action.

 Three Real-World Pilots

The MEDIATE framework will be validated across three operational environments, each representing a different facet of modern critical infrastructure:

Securing container ship digital systems and port community platforms against cyber threats

Protecting automated warehouse systems including robotic storage and fulfilment operations

Last-Mile Delivery
Safeguarding autonomous vehicle fleets and smart locker infrastructure in urban logistics
 What's Next
 

Toward pilot deployments

As the development phase progresses, the MEDIATE framework will begin validation in its three real-world pilot environments. This will provide concrete evidence of the framework's effectiveness in protecting critical infrastructure against evolving cyber threats - and will feed directly into the project's final recommendations and exploitation plans.
