Established in 1972, Danaos Shipping Company is a global leader in containership and dry bulk operations. With a modern fleet of 82 vessels, Danaos is committed to operational excellence, safety, and environmental responsibility.
At the forefront of maritime technology, Danaos Research Centre (DrC) plays a pivotal role in EU-funded research and innovation. With over 47 collaborative research projects, DRC is driving advances in AI, IoT, data analytics, robotics, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
In the MEDIATE project, Danaos contributes primarily to Use Case 1, applying the MEDIATE methodology and platform to assess and enhance the reliability of digital systems on container ships. Key focus areas include Digital Twins, cybersecurity, and trustworthy AI enabled by federated learning, aiming to identify and implement opportunities for improvement. A critical component is the integration of Just-In-Time (JIT) arrival strategies, which optimize port calls by synchronizing ship arrivals with berth availability.
Key goals include:
- Improving cybersecurity resilience
- Strengthening trust in AI and data-driven models through federated learning
- Collaborating with external stakeholders, especially the Valencia Port Foundation (VPF), to shape requirements and support the platform’s development.
